Eight Tips for Stronger Writing
59Eight Tips For Stronger Writing
The following tips will help your presentation and make your writing stronger. Remember writing is a craft; a writer is not much different from an artist shaping a sculpture or painting a picture.
1. Write with strong verbs that show action. Most of the time, "is," can be avoided. Also, "do" and "get" are weak verbs.
· Using complete, obtain, stole, grabbed, or perform convey a stronger picture.
2. Use active voice instead of passive voice.
3. Vary sentence openers.
· Using the same sentence structure or word to open a sentence makes the writing monotonous. Make sure that all sentences begin with different words. Mix independent clauses, subordinate clauses, prepositional phrases, and verbal phrases when starting sentences.
4. Use different types of sentences.
·Mix up the placement of verbal phrases and subordinates. Don't use more than two simple sentences in a row. Mix in compound and complex sentences.
5. Use subordinates as transitions.
·Instead of always using transition statement, use subordinate clauses to show the transition and combine sentences.
6. Avoid unnecessary wordiness.
·Always use the simplest and most direct way to write something. Often, prepositional phrases are unnecessary and can be removed from the sentence.
7. Adverbs are not necessary most of the time. Use strong verbs, similes, or metaphors; they create a stronger image.
8. Don't over use adjectives.
