VP Picks
62Who should be on McCain's Ticket?
I know I am late in writing a hub such as this one, especially when I am trying no to show a preference for either candidate. So I will write some thoughts on Obama's pick, and then I would speculate on what would be a strong choice for McCain since there is still a week left before he has indicated he will make hi pick public.
Obama chose Senator Joe Biden as his running mate. To me, this creates a strong ticket for the Democrats; it shores up a glaring weakness - Obama's foreign policy experience. This weakness has been no secret, and it was speculated that former Georgia Senator Sam Nunn might be the pick to bolster him, and in doing so help make Georgia more competitive. While he did not pick Nunn, Biden brings just as much experience and strength to the ticket.
As a Chairman for the Foreign Relations Committee, Biden brings the experience needed for for developing policy as well as the diplomatic skill needed. He knows many of these world leaders by name, and they know him. Having the this quality on the ticket will help Obama balance the scale with McCain in the areas of foreign policy and national security.
Since this pick gives credibility to Obama in his weakest spot, McCain should do the same. What is McCain's weak point? The Economy. McCain needs to pick someone with strong economic credentials. Who might this person be? Many speculate that Romney could bring this aspect to the ticket, but there is one name that many are talking about. Steve Forbes could be the answer.
While Steve Forbes may have already ran a failed Presidential campaign, just as Biden has, he brings the economic understanding and aptitude that McCain lacks. Plus, they already have a relationship. Forbes has been an advisor to McCain throughout the campaign.
Forbes has proved himself to be a successful business man, and for the Republicans no one knows the ins and outs of the economy as much as he does. He can bring the leadership and knowledge needed to craft an economic policy that will resonate with voters. One such idea is his flat tax, which places all tax payers on a level playing field. Championing fiscal responsibility has been another issue where Forbes stands out.
Forbes would also brings a strong "stage presence" to the campaign. Unless it is a town hall meeting, McCain doesn't play to the camera well, and Forbes could be the face and voice that could refresh the campaign in this area.
Despite you political views, what do you think of my idea?
