Why is the heart associated with the feeling 'love' when in fact it's the brain that is responsible for all...
66This is an interesting question. I would assume it is because the seat of our emotions in western culture is the heart. We have phrases like, "listen to your heart," or, "what does your heart tell you." These statements refer to instinct. While, "I am broken hearted," refers to emotions. Yet, both of these are from our brain.
Looking at the heart as the seat of emotions goes all the way back to ancient Greece, where the heart was seen as the soul. Perhaps, since most of the philosophers of the day valued instinct and wisdom (all things associated with the soul) that the center of emotions was the heart and not the brain. The Greko-Roman culture has had a major influences on western culture as a whole, we have never moved from this thought.
However, in some ancient cultures the seat of emotions is the gut or bowel. Remember phrases like, "when I look at her I get butterflies in my stomach." or "I have a gut feeling about this." Again, it has something to do with association. For these cultures it was a tangable experience. I get nervous and feel it in my stomach.
These are my thoughts. Any scholars out there with others?
